Giving it the push

word of the week farewell pushchair travel system

This week has been an amazing week in the Bear house because we have said goodbye, so long, farewell to the pushchair!

It wasn’t a momentous occasion like I thought (and not-so-secretly hoped) it would be.  There was no fanfare.  There was no mental note of ‘this will be the last time we use it/put it up/put it down/load it in the car’.  You get the idea.

No, it just ‘happened’ and was initiated by our little bear.  She has mentioned that she doesn’t need it anymore over the past couple of weeks.  We were reluctant (particularly me) to give it the ‘push’ because of practicalities.  It’s so much easier and quicker to get from A to B to Z, from pre-school/childminder/work on time with it!

However, one morning she decided she wanted to ride her big bike.  So we collapsed the pushchair and that was that, unknowingly for the last time.  It will go in the bin.  We thought about passing it on or giving it to a charity shop but to honest, it’s at the end of its 4 1/2 year old life.  And then some.  Chicco is the make and it’s served us very well.

I remember the day we bought it.  Hubby had to take it upstairs to out of the way, bit by bit because I couldn’t lift anything at all really, never mind heavy, due to being 5 months pregnant and having a complicated pregnancy.  And there were a lot of bits to it!  I remember putting it together like a jigsaw with my bump in ‘tow’.

Now we have said goodbye.  There is no more pushchair.  It is gone.  Finito.  Goodbye old friend, you have served us very well…

…and that’s why my #WordoftheWeek with The Reading Residence is ‘push’.

3 wishes

3 wishes the prompt share with me

Picture source: Brens Cakes via Pinterest

Three wishes in three words…

Aside from the words any loving, nurturing parent would choose for their child to be (happy, confident, heathy…), here are three wishes that I would choose for our little bear:

  1. Have good, solid friends who will understand you through the good and bad times.  And vice versa.
  2. Be sensitive to others, yet be assertive when needed.
  3. Be free-spirited – if you believe in something enough, grab it and go for it.  Shun negativity.

Three simple wishes to share with you and with our little bear.

Meet ‘the animal friends’

animals theme game

We have our very own version of CBeebies ’64 Zoo Lane’ next door to us…

There’s a lion, a tiger, a meerkat, a monkey (several actually – of the cheeky variety!), many other animals and of course, a bear.  They are our little bear’s friends at the childminder’s.

Our little bear’s friends are affectionately referred to in our house as her ‘animal friends’.  This came about just before she started going to our lovely childminder, and before the wire garden fence was replaced with a sturdy wooden one.  It was a sunny day and we were enjoying the last days of my maternity leave.  Daddy Bear had come home from work earlier than normal and had joined myself and our little bear in the garden.  We had an audience which had intrigued our little bear.  There were around 5 little people all standing on the other side of the fence, aged up to around 4 years old.  One of them was chatting away to us and Daddy Bear joked to me, “don’t feed the animals!”.  And there it stuck ~ the animal friends!

She has lots of friends does our little bear.  The ones at the childminder’s and also at pre-school.  We are always hearing stories of her little friends and it’s a delight to chat to her about them.  I hope that our little bear continues to thrive socially.  Just last week she was made ‘Star of the Week’ at pre-school for ‘supporting her peers and helping to resolve issues’.  Proud?  Just a little…

Sew

Sew wotw

So (pun intended), thank goodness I had some pink thread because I have found myself doing a fair bit of sewing this week.  Not for a costume, but for the ‘bear’ essentials…

The jewel came off our little bear’s Sleeping Beauty dress (calamity!  No, it really was…).  Then a button came off something else, then the flower came off a favourite headband.

So, you see, I have been sewing this week.  One stitch at a time…

‘My’ spring project…

spring

For me, spring conjures up lovely days of being outside, as I’m sure it may do for you too.  With that in mind, I was quite chuffed to acquire a nice wine rack.  Seeing as how I don’t drink any more, I suggested to hubby that we might turn the rack on its side and put plants in the holes.  Perfect and creative.

That was until our little bear got hold of it and turned it into her ‘princess castle’ to, “go with my pony castle mummy!”

She’s had hours of fun with ‘my’ spring project…!

Doh!

paper

I had left it to the last minute to wrap a birthday present for our little bear’s friend.  It was a pirate/princess theme party and I knew for certain that we had nothing along those lines in our wrapping paper ‘booty’.  In fact, following ‘birthday party season’ just before Christmas, I knew that we had depleted the whole stash.  There was nothing left.  The booty was gone…

What now?  How about wrapping the thankfully smallish jigsaw box in one of our bear’s paintings?  It was creative.  It would be a nice gesture… until I considered the potential for the birthday boy to rip open his present at the party and not at home.  That would certainly bring tears from our little bear!  She gets possessive about who has her paintings/drawings and where they’re ‘hung’.  So no, that would never do.

A-ha!  I remembered.  We had a roll of very girly stripey age non-specific wrapping paper buried in the bottom of our wardrobe.  Buried so deep it had been forgotten.  Until now.  I could turned it ‘inside out’, so to speak.  But wait.  We also had a slightly crumpled remnant of ‘The Simpsons’ Christmas paper too.  Hubby had bought it.  I couldn’t stand it!  There looked to be just enough.  Well, it would use it up!  And use it up we did… ‘inside out’.  The birthday boy had his jigsaw presented in back-to-front Simpsons wrapping paper.  He wouldn’t know until he ripped the paper and saw the other side!  If indeed he would see the other side amid the present unwrapping frenzy!  I did confess to my very good friend, his Mum.  She of course saw the funny side!

What wrapping paper disasters have you had?

Shepherd

note on a cork board

“Pass the bowl, oh Mummy Bear

I’m going to be sick”,

said our little bear to me one night,

the poor lamb was tom and dick.

~

Okay, so not a direct quote,

for our bear is not yet five.

You get the picture though,

bowl in hand as I duck and dive.

~

What a nasty time when our poor lambs are weak

as the yucky bugs take hold.

They just want their mums, they just want a cuddle,

as we shepherd them into the fold.

~

The extra washing, even less sleep,

the bugs they play merry hell.

But truth be told, we do not care,

we just want our lambs fit and well.

Prompted to be in reflective mood…

image

There is so much to reflect on when our little ones grow up so fast, in front of our very own eyes.

As they become more and more articulate, as they hold their own full-flung conversations, as they continue to push those boundaries and learn to stand their ground!

It could be a sad time, seeing your little one grow up, but I prefer to reflect on those times with pure happiness.  With gratitude.  With the sincere feeling of being blessed with the feeling of having created another human being, another life who is part of you, part of their daddy and, perhaps more importantly, part of themselves.

A time of reflection should be an opportunity to celebrate what someone or something has become, and therefore also a time to look forward with anticipation at what lays ahead.

Positively exciting!

…and they will love you too

garden theme game

When I picked our little bear up

from nursery one day last week,

It was rather chilly for a spring day,

It was really rather bleak.

~

As the lady opened the gate to me

I could see my happy little bear,

She was grinning from ear to ear,

she just loves going there.

~

With a skip and a hop,

she came running up to me,

a bunch of homemade flowers in her hand,

“I made them for you Mummy!”.

~

My heart burst with pride,

I grinned from ear to ear,

“I made them by myself Mummy!”

I will always hold them dear.

~

These flowers are quite special,

they didn’t need a garden to grow,

or Mr Bloom’s compost,

there were no seedlings to sow.

~

No, these petals are paper thin,

pipecleaners are their stems.

They are guaranteed to grow,

they don’t have ‘ifs’ and ‘whens’.

~

They simply need lots of nurturing

and lots of talking to.

They just need love and cuddles

and they will love you too.
