Blogging all things parenting… and sometimes a bit in between ;)

Being stretched to the limit but holding it all together… just!

Quite honestly, my word of the week can only be …

word of the week elastic blog

…because I have been pulled in all directions, I have snapped, I have been wrapped around little fingers, I have been stretched in every way, shape and form imaginable, I have pinged back and ‘lost it’ but then more importantly, I have kept it all together.

Well, to be honest, that last one about keeping it all together is debatable!  You see, we have been decorating, dealt with blocked waste pipes, I have been a pushover with our little bear and I’ve just about managed to keep my sanity through it all…

Wonder what on earth the next week of the school summer holidays will bring?!

Why I don’t want it to be Friday…

The Reading Residence

I started the week thinking it was ages until Friday.  And for once, I was glad!  Why on earth would I be pleased that Friday was a whole 5 days away??  Well because it’s our little bear’s penultimate week at pre-school.

We’re all very excited about starting big school in September but deep down, I’m trying to stall it.  Just a teeny weeny, incy wincy bit.  As each day has come and gone, I’ve realised that mentally I’m not quite as prepared as I thought I was.

The winding down proper starts next Wednesday with a leaver’s presentation.  I will do my utmost to hold it together but may well have to let it all out after bear bed-time.  Then on Thursday our bear will wear her school uniform to pre-school.  Each morning she opens her wardrobe to choose what to wear and each morning she’s asked if it’s uniform day yet…to which I have to remind her that she can wear it for one day next week and then every weekday in September when school starts!  And boy oh boy, when she dresses herself in that school uniform again.  Well, it’ll be emotional!

Then on Friday of course, it’s the biggie.  The last time we will get ready to go to pre-school.  The last time we will walk through the gate into pre-school.  The last time the gate will be opened into pre-school.  The last time our little bear will get her velcroed name off the ‘register’ board.  The last time she is a little bear.  When I go to collect her, she will be really, truly a big bear.  That’s when I will be taking lots of deep breaths, swallowing and blinking back the tears as I come to the realisation that our little bear is most definitely a big bear….

So, my word of the week with The Reading Residence is ‘countdown’!

Enter(pris)ing the rainbow loom craze! (How to make a rainbow loom bracelet)

(Above: our bear concentrating on making a loom bracelet!  It’s worth pointing out that we had been to a local Fun Day and she decided that she didn’t want her face painting but a butterfly on her hand instead…)

This week our little bear has been making rainbow loom bracelets.  You know those multi-coloured pieces of elastic?  You pop them on a loom, you hook over and hook over again.  Hey presto, a rainbow loom bracelet!

Her cousin showed her how to make a bracelet and kindly gave our bear some supplies to start her off.  Then Grandma kindly bought our bear a bracelet making kit, including loom!  Our bear was over the loom moon!

So, the bracelet making began in earnest.  She announced that she wanted to give bracelets to a few of her pre-school friends, some of her childminder friends and some to her playgroup friends from ‘back in the day’.

“They’re going to be presents,” she said.

(Above: Our bear talks you through how to make a loom bracelet)

When I told our bear that my friend at work would like her to make one for some pennies, our bear was very proud… and this made her think.

Her enterprising side kicked in…

She said she would make one for my work friend for 3p, one for me for 3p and anyone else who wanted one could give her 3p for one.

“Then I can buy more elastics!” she said.

…Rainbow loom bracelet anyone?!

We’ve got quite a few!…

Chain reaction…

word of the week reacting

It’s been so lovely to see some proper sunshine this past week or so.  Or it would be, if only our little bear didn’t have a reaction to every suncream going.

Believe me, that is not an exaggeration.  Or at least it seems not to be.  We have tried several brands of ‘kids’ suncream but they all seem to bring her out in little red spots on the main areas where the suncream has been applied.

So I took to google and found several more that are supposedly organic or don’t contain certain ingredients that are apparantly (according to forums) infamous for causing these reactions.

I’m waiting on an online delivery of a bottle of the creamy stuff after I’ve read excellent reviews from others in a similar position.  Let’s hope that does the trick.  And if it doesn’t… well off to the doctor’s we go!

The future’s bright!

word of the week bright

Around a month ago, we found out (with much relief!) that our little bear had been allocated a place at our first choice of school for her September start.  I rang the school up just after the Easter holidays to ask about settling in sessions because hubby and I would have to think about fitting them in around work.  With much relief (again!) we were told that reception start on full days and that we would be sent all the information in around 3 weeks.

Well, true to their word, this morning the postie delivered an envelope from our little bear’s school with all the information about a Parents’ Welcome Evening.  Along with several optional settling in ‘stay and play lunchtime sessions’.

Not only are we very impressed that they sent the information out at all, without the need to chase them up, but we are uber impressed with the general attitude of the staff on the phone (and also on the school tour we took) and that they did indeed send the information out in ‘around 3 weeks’.

The future looks bright…!

I think that it’s easy to see why my word of the week with The Reading Residence is ‘bright’!

It’s been a trying week!

word of the week trying

“Where’s this water come from?!” asks hubby.

…which is never a good thing to hear, especially not when you’re just about to sit down together to watch a DVD for ‘date night’!

Given our issues with our boiler (and the leak that came through the kitchen ceiling), we both automatically looked at the ceiling and were relieved at least that no water was coming down…!

An hour or so later and we had dismantled the washing machine waste pipe, part of the kitchen sink plumbing and emptied the water pipe into a mop bucket (several times!).

Not the most relaxing night but it could have been much, much worse.  We were immensely proud of ourselves, given that we don’t have any plumbing skills.  Between us, we remedied the problem with minimal stress.

From trying to ‘keep calm and sort the washing machine’ which was very ‘trying’, to persisting and keeping on ‘trying’ to eliminate the source of the problem, it’s easy to see why my word of the week with The Reading Residence is indeed ‘trying’!

Getting an airing…

Word of the week

Fling a window open wide or better still, step outside.

Take a deep breath – full of fresh air, or at least ‘outside’ air (even it’s not ‘fresh’!)

That’s what we’ve had in abundance this week by way of:

  • visits to feed the ducks
  • playing in the beautiful grounds of a local beauty spot
  • gardening while our bear blew bubbles
  • a sponsored walk to the local park with pre-school

Yes, fresh air by the lungful.  And haven’t we all slept better because of it!

…and that’s why my #WordoftheWeek with The Reading Residence is ‘air’.

‘Frozen’

Frozen word of the week

Our little bear was safely tucked up in bed and there I was checking my twitter when I saw a tweet mentioning me.  This was before I had looked at my notifications and seen my direct tweet.

The tweet said there was a winner of the ‘Frozen’ DVD…  and it direct tweeted me, me me!!  I was excited muchly.  I know that’s not grammatically correct but frankly I don’t even care.  I was thrilled, excited and over the moon to have won the DVD that everyone (yes indeed, everyone) is talking about.  And it seems everyone else has already seen it.

The next day over breakfast I told our little bear what I had won for her and her little eyes lit up.  “Do you mean this one [reaching for her Disney Princess magazine]?”  Yes I did.  On Saturday we will tell her a little porky pie that the postman has been and our prize has arrived.  We won’t really have time to watch it all in one sitting before then.

I’m not sure which bear is more excited!

School time in a little rhyme

School time word of the week

School Time in a Little Rhyme

The time is near,

We’ve been waiting so long,

Yet it’s here already,

But where’s the time gone?

~

The time is still,

I try to log on,

The website’s crashed,

The night will be long.

~

The time is here,

My heart starts to race,

The screen refreshes,

We got our first place!

~

The relief is here,

There’s disbelief too,

But I’m so, so happy,

Pass the tissue!

~

The gamble paid off,

Our little bear’s got in,

We got our first choice,

Please escuse the grin!

~

Ready (and waiting)…

word of the week ready

There are many, many memorable moments in parenting.  If I had to choose one though, this very week would be one of them.

I’ve had the week off work and have spent a little more time with our little bear than usual.

As her mummy, I see her everyday, can tell you everything about her – likes, dislikes – everything!  That makes me proud.

What I find amazing is that our little ones can literally change over night.  Literally.  It’s sometimes as if a switch goes on in their brains, like the jigsaw piece slots into place.

This week, that jigsaw piece has shown me just how grown-up our little bear really is now.  I can’t even put it into precise words (ironic as this is a post for Word of the Week…).

Okay, I really need to pinpoint a word to describe how our little bear has matured seemingly overnight.  How she has matured in every way.  How she is questioning in a different way.  How she is ready to give her baby toys to the Easter bunny.  How she is going to school in September.  How she is ‘ready’ for that next massive step, that next leap…

How I am too.

We are ‘ready’ and waiting!…

…and that’s why my #WordoftheWeek with The Reading Residence is ‘ready’.
