Giving it the push

on March 28, 2014

word of the week farewell pushchair travel system

This week has been an amazing week in the Bear house because we have said goodbye, so long, farewell to the pushchair!

It wasn’t a momentous occasion like I thought (and not-so-secretly hoped) it would be.  There was no fanfare.  There was no mental note of ‘this will be the last time we use it/put it up/put it down/load it in the car’.  You get the idea.

No, it just ‘happened’ and was initiated by our little bear.  She has mentioned that she doesn’t need it anymore over the past couple of weeks.  We were reluctant (particularly me) to give it the ‘push’ because of practicalities.  It’s so much easier and quicker to get from A to B to Z, from pre-school/childminder/work on time with it!

However, one morning she decided she wanted to ride her big bike.  So we collapsed the pushchair and that was that, unknowingly for the last time.  It will go in the bin.  We thought about passing it on or giving it to a charity shop but to honest, it’s at the end of its 4 1/2 year old life.  And then some.  Chicco is the make and it’s served us very well.

I remember the day we bought it.  Hubby had to take it upstairs to out of the way, bit by bit because I couldn’t lift anything at all really, never mind heavy, due to being 5 months pregnant and having a complicated pregnancy.  And there were a lot of bits to it!  I remember putting it together like a jigsaw with my bump in ‘tow’.

Now we have said goodbye.  There is no more pushchair.  It is gone.  Finito.  Goodbye old friend, you have served us very well…

…and that’s why my #WordoftheWeek with The Reading Residence is ‘push’.

  1. Ah! Little Bear knows best! These bits and pieces of paraphanalia serve us very well over time and it is almost sad to say goodbye. Its the same with the clothes. And some of them are so cute too… #WotW

  2. Aww.. I cant wait to get rid of mine. I have to confess too that it helps a lot cuz we just walk to his pre-school but if he wants it to go I will be happy to do so.

    Congrats to you =)

Awwww its bitter sweet to see them grow isn’t it? Minutes silence for chico?

  4. So difficult when you have to say goodbye to ‘baby’ things. Lovely that your daughter decided herself that she no longer need’s it. It shows great independence x #WotW

    • We’ve been telling her for a few weeks that she doesn’t need her pushchair any more because she’s a big girl etc etc. But yes, ultimately she decided. It was the same with her dummy in the end too, and her rapidly shrinking grow bag at bedtime! She decided. We didn’t really push her on any of it (pun not intended!) I was really nervous of her out-growing her grow bag because it really helped her settle but needn’t have worried.

  5. Well done to your little bear 🙂 I was so relieved when we got rid of ours x

Aww!! It seems absolutely ages since mine were last in their pushchairs….I don’t miss them one bit!! hehehe
    Well done little bear x

That’s a big milestone! Your little one (or not so little one) is awesome for leading the charge on this one. I think there is a lot to be said for us parents following their lead. x

  8. Wow well done, I am both looking forward to and dreading that day!

  9. Alice Megan says:

What a big step especially as it was initiated by little bear!

  10. That is a milestone! Boo was usurped from hers just before her 3rd birthday, when Little Man arrived and his need was greater! She’d been happily without it for a while then anyway. I’ve a feeling my son will want it for a bit longer, as he does like to relax and watch the world go by in it, so we will see…! Must feel good, though 🙂 Thanks for sharing with #WotW

Well done to little Bear for deciding it was time to stop using the pushchair. I cannot imagine my life without mine at the moment (youngest is only 17 months old and baby due in June), having to carry bags of stuff, wellies and whatever I store in the basket. I guess you adapt and pack a smaller bag once it is gone! Enjoy being pushchair free! Mel #WotW
